My experiment with meeting a moderate daily word count got off to a rough start. Some goddamn plague kicked the shit out of me all week. Most of my time was spent unconscious or wishing to be.

Still, I managed to drag myself to the keyboard a few times. And when I did, I found the word count strangely freeing. I need 1000 words. Then I'm done. Absolved. Anything above that is a bonus.

This week I found inspiration for the structure of the chapter in an odd place: reviews of Cormac McCarthy's The Passenger). The book itself is strange. Reviews for the book are stranger. Reading a bunch of literary criticism reminded me of the kindest thing a writer can do: get the the point.

So, that's what the chapter does now. It gets to the point. We're talking about math. We'll use it to stand on shoulders, rather than toes.
