Sushi Roe Under a Microscope

In what I remember as everyone at the table agreeing was perfectly normal behavior, I smuggled a handful of roe out of a sushi restaurant to look at later.

Here it is under a microscope.

I haven't been able to figure out what the thread-like bundles are. Their size and complexity varies wildly between eggs.

Some are massive tangles.

At 40x, they look tube-like.

Sometimes they were small.

They're also tougher than you realize.
