Data Oriented Programming in Java: Chapter 5 Progress (2024-11-17)

The killing turned into a massacre. 8000 words: gone. I squeezed 60 pages down to 40. The goal is to get it down to 35.

The draft itself is still super rough. However, there's enough structure in place that I sent it over to the editors for feedback. I'm not sure if it's hitting the mark yet. Fitting "the real world" into a book is extremely hard. I've always wondered why there are so few book on software engineering "from the trenches." Now I have my answer. It is extremely hard to walk the line between complexity and explainability. I'm not sure I've threaded that needle yet.

We'll see.

The book is now one chapter longer. I achieved my extraordinary cutting of word count by forking most of it over into a new chapter. Chapter 05 is all about modeling behaviors. This new chapter will be about implementing them.

My plan for next week is to take it easy and enjoy the holidays. I've been running myself ragged trying to finish this chapter. I'm ready to think about something other than Java for a few days.
